5.1 Setting Limits for Your Child

Other sections in this chapter: Setting Limits | Encouraging Good Behavior | When Your Baby Cries | Take Time for Yourself

Parent's Guide Setting limits means having rules, rewards, and consequences to help your child learn right from wrong. It is our job as parents to set up rules that are fair. Our children, on the other hand, must learn about the world by exploring and experimenting.

There are different ways of managing your child's behavior depending on her age.

Hitting, pushing, or pulling teaches your child:

  • To feel small and helpless.
  • Poor self-esteem.
  • It's okay to hit people you love.
  • Hitting is an acceptable way to express anger.
  • To fear you, not respect you.

Try to do this instead:

  • Set limits for your child.
  • Earn your child's respect by using words.
  • Ignore tantrums and whining.
  • Distract your child with something else: toys, books, games, etc.
  • Use Time Out for your 2-to 6-year old, 1 minute for each year of age.
