Tips for Community Group Involvement
A group of people, gathered for a common good, have at their disposal the collective energy and creativity of willing volunteers. Be innovative in finding ways to use the power of your group and to attract new members to your cause.
Strategize for Maximum Effectiveness
- As a group, go into an agency, and volunteer your time.
- Collaborate with other groups to fundraise or to pool each other's resources for the community.
- Look out for isolated neighbors and encourage them to participate.
- Reach out to parents who are unaware of your program. Make personal invitations!
- Try to create intergenerational collaborations Ñ i.e., schools with nursing homes.
Any Group Can be a Community Group
- Church/faith groups can open up their facilities to be utilized on unused days.
- Schools can arrange clothing drives for all ages of children (not just those attending school.)
- Churches can have block parties and invite neighbors in the area. Introduce neighbors in the community, and help isolated seniors get involved.
- Crafts personsÑwoodworkers, quilters, etc., can periodically offer their talents/skills to workshops for families and kids.
- Employers can encourage volunteerism in their community by providing incentives: flexible schedules, paid leaveÉetc.
Groups Can Help in Small Ways...
- Feed kids before they begin an activity, go to church, attend sports event, etc.
- Provide transportation/taxi service to events.
...and Larger Ones
- Raise money for scholarshipsÑcamps, sports, training, courses, etc.
Help Out Families
- Sponsor "showers" for new mothers (or grandmothers) that are isolated or in need.
- Sponsor a "single mom's oil-change" day.
Develop Creative Outlets for Children or Parents
- Organize a space to do art projects, just for kids or for kids with their parents.
- Sponsor or organize a theater group for parents.
