Simple Things You Can Do

Children need an active community that supports them. You can contribute to your community more easily than you might think. "Volunteering" does not have to be a second job or a long-term commitment. Opportunities to give freely of yourself are everywhere. Don't underestimate the positive force that even a little of your time, energy and talents can create.

Do Anything ... Even a Small Thing Makes a Difference.

  • Learn the names of children in your neighborhood.
  • Speak to children at their level; stoop down to make eye contact.
  • Tell a child what they are doing "right".
  • Say "hello". Be friendly.
  • Give encouragement in the grocery line.
  • Compliment another parent with good parenting skills.
  • Offer to assist the family with many children; invite one of the children to sit with you during church service.
  • Offer to do shopping or run errands for a parent so they can spend time with their child.
  • Prepare a meal for new mom/family when back from hospital.
  • Reaching out to your neighbors makes you a positive role model. They'll feel more comfortable about reaching out themselves.

Become a Resource in Your Neighborhood

  • Learn about community organizations. Which ones most interest you? Pay them a visit, or check out their web-sites.
  • Volunteer in the schools - get to know kids and their parents.
  • Invite friends to volunteer with you. Work in soup kitchens.
  • Investigate parent-to-parent mentoring through schools, workplace, etc.
  • Arrange block parties, potlucks, and be sure to make a special invite to families who would not normally attend.
  • Open up communications with minority parents, parents with special needs, etc. - those who may feel isolated.
  • Serve on an advisory board/committee that serves children.
  • Donate money - support agencies/programs that assist children/families.
  • Vote - advocate for children.
